Great Scott! It's October 21st 2015...
Unreleased poster of Marty and Doc Brown from the original Back to the Future Movie (1985)
Of course you know today, Oct. 21, 2015, as the day Marty McFly went to the future to help Doc Brown prevent a disaster in his family.
It was a very warm night on July 5th, 1985 when I yelled "NOOO!" after Doc, Marty, and Jennifer flew back toward the screen and the words "TO BE CONTINUED" came up. "No No No! You cannot go into the future and leave the story off like that!" I thought.
It was a long 4-year wait to see where those guys went! And I was not disappointed. 2015 was as fresh as a new penny. Holograms, automatic-lacing shoes and the coveted hoverboard.
Ahhh yes, the hoverboard. Every teenage boy fantasized about the day the wheels would come off. When 2015 rolled around, some fans decided to call Robert Zemeckis out on his promise.
And just when no one thought we'd make it to 2015 with an actual hoverboard, Hendo made one. Then they put Tony Hawk on top of it and sent a video out to the world.
Yeah, it's a little bulky, it doesn't go very fast, and it isn't pink, but hey - it's a hoverboard! Unfortunately, it costs about $10,000 to buy one, so don't start breaking piggy banks just yet, kids.
So how does 2015 compare to Zemeckis' vision? First off, let me be honest, I didn't think the year would ever come. First it was 1999 and we all played Prince's Purple Rain album to death. Then 2001 came and there was no monolith on the moon. 2010 rolled around and we weren't orbiting Jupiter. And in 2015, there are no flying cars. 1989 me would be pretty impressed with 2015 and our smart phones, Bluetooth headsets, and hands-free intelligent vehicles, but clothes haven't changed too much. I'm still wearing Star Wars t-shirts and flip flops.
So in honor of Back to the Future Day, check out this cool video by Epic Rap Battles and at least once today give a shout out to Micheal J. Fox, who gave us so much in so short of a time. In honor of him, we are going to give 25% off and donate proceeds from any sale using the coupon code DELOREAN to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
